How to iron without an iron
Wrinkles in clothes come from so many sources—being stored in a drawer or suitcase, or being left in a dryer too long after the cycle ends. And, for many people, the thought of bringing out the iron is a chore they would rather not do.
So, if you’re wondering how to get wrinkles out of clothes without plugging in the iron, check out these quick and easy tips:
1. Use your clothes dryer.
Add something moist—a couple of ice cubes or a damp towel—with your wrinkled clothes in the dryer. The moisture will turn into wrinkle-removing steam. If you’d like to add a fresh scent to this technique, dampen a couple of dryer sheets and use them instead of the towel.
With any of these methods, set the dryer for 15 minutes on a medium setting.
2. Use a wrinkle-removing spray or make one.
Wrinkle-removing sprays are best used on cotton clothes, which are less likely to show water spots. If you don’t have a commercial-brand spray, you can make one by adding 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water, or add a small amount of liquid fabric softener to water. Spray the wrinkle until it’s damp but not soaking and let air dry. Your spray bottle can go with you to the office or the car!
3. Hair care products are for more than hair!
If you have a small section of clothing that is easy to reach, plug in your flat iron. This method is great for collars, cuffs and hems. Make sure the iron is free of hair products, and don’t clamp the iron onto the clothing too long—it could burn.
Your hair dryer can work wonders on wrinkles, too. Lightly dampen the wrinkle and then blow dry on the lowest setting. Keep the dryer two inches away from clothing so that it doesn’t burn.
4. Dampen a towel.
Lay the towel on top of your wrinkled clothing. Press down to smooth out creases.
5. Make your own steam.
If you have some time and would prefer to steam your clothing, there are two ways to do this:
While you’re showering, hang your clothing in the bathroom with the door closed. It’s an easy way to spruce up your wardrobe while traveling.
If you are a tea drinker, boil water in a tea kettle, and hang your clothes about a foot away from the steaming kettle.
6. Use a hot cooking pot.
If you don’t own an iron but would like to use something similar, boil water in a medium pot. Dump the water out, and use the bottom of the pot as an iron. You will have to work efficiently as the pot will cool quickly.
Whether you are at home or traveling, these tips can get you through every wrinkle!
